Dr. Rummel is an optometric physician with certification and expertise in a variety of special eye care fields of knowledge. He is the Director of the Rummel Eye Care/Low Vision Care Center in Jackson, NJ and is the Director of The Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation and Visual Perception Clinic at the Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation, Ponoma, NJ. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO). Academy membership is awarded to optometric physicians who are respected, ethical, and knowledgeable. Dr. Rummel is also a Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (FCOVD). This certification is in Vision Development and Vision Therapy, (the areas of rehabilitative eye care related to double vision, eye muscle disorders, learning related vision problems, visual perception/processing and amblyopia). He is also one of only a few eye doctors in the United States to have achieved Clinical Skills Certification Level 3 in Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation (FNORA). Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation includes the care of people with visual/ocular issues due to neurological issues like head injury, stroke, brain tumor and multiple sclerosis. Dr. Rummel has additionally developed an advanced optical technology system called Side Vision Awareness Glasses (SVAG), which allows those with neurological side vision loss (hemianopsia) due to stroke or brain injury to be safer and more independent in their activities of daily living; and allows many to drive more safely. His protocols for improving visual awareness for those with hemianopsia are used by many occupational therapists. Dr. Rummel has taken advanced low vision training in the design of custom made telescope glasses that allow those with poor vision, or partial sight, to be able to read, see faces of loved ones and even drive more safely. He was awarded Fellowship in the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (FIALVS), and treats vision impairment not being helped by regular glasses, medicine, or surgery (due to eye diseases like Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Optic Nerve Disease and Retinitis Pigmentosa). Dr. Rummel has also developed a system for examining and prescribing visual field expanding reverse telescope glasses for those with constricted side vision (tunnel vision). In addition to those special areas of visual and ocular eye care, his clinical practice, Rummel Eye Care/Low Vision Care Center, Jackson NJ, also provides adult and pediatric primary eye care including the treatment of eye diseases like glaucoma, eye infections and eye injuries. He was also nominated by NJ Family Magazine as “one of New Jersey favorite kids’ doctors”. Eye examinations for eyeglasses and contact lenses are also available at Rummel Eye Care. A staff ophthalmologist is available for LASIK refractive surgery and cataract surgery.
