Robert A. Kayal, MD, FAAOS, is on the cutting edge when it comes to partial and full knee replacement technology. The skill of the surgeon is paramount, and Kayal has performed partial knee and patellofemoral knee replacement procedures for years—more surgeries than any other orthopaedist in the region. In addition to introducing this technology to his peers in the medical community, he introduced the concept and convenience of outpatient joint replacement surgery to the local community. He continues to regularly perform outpatient unicompartmental and patellofemoral knee replacements. Dr. Kayal proudly performed the first-ever minimally invasive partial knee replacement and patellofemoral knee joint replacement at The Valley Hospital and at Patient Care Associates. He also performs this procedure at Hackensack University Medical Center. Dr. Kayal introduced cartilage transplantation to NY and NJ, performing operations that delay the need for joint replacement surgery, or in some cases, allow patients to avoid surgery. When joint replacement surgery is necessary, Kayal specializes in several patient-specific procedures, including total replacement of the joint, hip or knee. In addition, Dr. Kayal performs breakthrough hip arthroscopy and state-of-the-art MLS laser therapy, as well as platelet-rich plasma injection therapy, for patients across Northern New Jersey and beyond. Dr. Kayal is the newly appointed Chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley. He received his Bachelor of Science in Pre-Medicine at Pennsylvania State University and began medical school immediately afterward, earning his MD from UMDNJ-NJMS in 1994. He was trained in the New York metropolitan region and has received accolades from the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, as well as an active member of the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society, Orthopaedic Surgeons of New Jersey, Bergen County Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He has received numerous distinguished awards and honors for his surgical expertise, follow-up care and compassion—including the prestigious Castle Connolly Top Doctors Award for three consecutive years.
