Dr. Hensle became a faculty member of the Department of Urology at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Director of Pediatric Urology at the Babies Hospital in New York City in 1978. He was the Director of Pediatric Urology at the Children's Hospital of New York from 1978 to 2005, and the Director Emeritus from 2005 to 2011. Dr. Hensle served as the Given Foundation Professor of Urology at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons from 2005 to 2011 and as the Associate Director of the Department of Urology during that period. At present he is the Given Foundation Professor of Urology Emeritus at Columbia University. Dr. Hensle has served as one of the early Presidents of the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), as well as president of the Society for Pediatric Urology (SPU), the Northeast Medical Association (NEMA) and the New York Medical and Surgical Society (NYMSS). He has served on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons, and Chairman of the Council of Urology of the ACS. In addition, he has been Chairman of the Urology Section of The New York Academy of Medicine and a long standing member of the examination committee of the American Board of Urology. Dr. Hensle has also served on the Urology Residence Review Committee for the ACGME. In 2015 he was awarded the Urology Medal by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Hensle is a member of The Society for Pediatric Urologic Surgery (SPUS), and a member of The American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons (AAGUS). Dr. Hensle has served on the Board of Trustees of the Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey, as well as the Board of Trustees of the Cambridge Nutritional Trust in Boston, Massachusetts for more than 20 years. In addition, he has served as Editorial Consultant of the Journal of Urology, The Journal of Pediatric Urology, Urology, the Journal of Pediatric Surgery and Transplantation. Dr. Hensle has served as Visiting Professor, or Visiting Lecturer more than 70 times in 11 different countries. During the last 35 years has done surgery on children in need all over the world. Dr. Hensle has been the author or co-author of more than 180 peer reviewed publications in literature, has authored 42 text book chapters, and 31 review articles. In addition, he has authored a non-medical book entitled, "Golf After Fifty, Playing Without Pain".
